This was a first big improvement in bolt action rifles separating them from all other makers.īut, probably more importantly, since they had been working with small cartridges, the rifles they manufactured, were made for the correct length of bolt throw for the length of the cartridges and consequently, Sako ended up with three action sizes based on families of cartridge lengths. PART 1 Quotes p.8Īll three of these original Sako actions were based on a Mauser design, with double square bridge receivers that were dovetailed to accept Sako scope rings or special Sako receiver sights designed to slide onto the tapered dovetails. MHO, The newer McMillan's finish isn't as smooth as the original Fiberclass (see 358 CPAK's picture above)and I believe they may have checkering, but I am not sure I always buy the the Hunter style, which has checkering and a pebble texture.Episode 17 – Sako Deluxe Forester and Finnwolf – A Pair of 243s Is there evidence (screw holes) that your barrel had a front sight? Your barrel may have been a 6.5x55 SE that was rechambered. They used Sako's peep sight that mounted on the rear dovetail. Also, all the 264s that I have seen had a front sight and no rear. It appears that this rifle may have been cobbled together. The Fiberclass stock you have will fit both the L61R and AIII actions. I believe all the 264s had BOFORS barrels.
This barrel should also be stamped BOFORS on the right side of the barrel above the stock and in front of the receiver. Besides the obvious do-it-yourself appearance, it's in the wrong location for that vintage of barrel the marking should be next to "Sako" on top of the barrel just in front of the receiver - if you had a scope on the rifle it would be difficult to see the stamp. Lou358CPAK, that's definitely a Fiberclass stock and Sako barrel, but that's not an original chambering stamp. The demand of new SAKO L61R FINNBEAR rifle's has not changed over the past 12 months. The used value of a SAKO L61R FINNBEAR rifle has fallen (150.80) dollars over the past 12 months to a price of 1,089.82. The 12 month average price is 1,089.82 used.

The wood is typical of these Deluxe Sakos with blond color. The metal is excellent with some thinning on the edges of the floor plate from field carry.
